Senegalese multi-instrumentalist performing artist, composer, DJ and producer Ibaaku – who in recent projects has also used the alias, Djola –, is a trendsetter of modern African music, and iconic figure of Afro-Futurism. His activity and influence go far beyond the domain of music, with his art also shaping fashion, technology and film.
Ibaaku, whose surprising look reminds some of an extraterrestrial being, has created a compelling blend of electronica and traditional African “magic music.” As an outlook, Afro-Futurism is part and parcel of his own art, and helps him to generate new discourses about Africa.
He has already gone some way towards fulfilling this vision because Ibaaku is there at cutting-edge fashion shows, in works of video art, and has inspired world stars like Beyoncé.
