Rather than merely striving for the authentic performance of historic music, Jordi Savall and Hespèrion XXI, the ensemble he founded, want to allow their audience to experience relations, interactions, and cultural symbioses that may also bring us closer to the solution of a number of contemporary problems.
For Savall, regions, periods, and styles never had clear-cut boundaries, and he has always considered the Mediterranean as an organically coherent cultural complex with a colourful spectrum of languages and religious relations.
In more fortunate periods, the Mediterranean Sea did not form the boundary of North and South, East and West, but was in fact a symbol of dialogue between the different regions. And for this character to remain decisive, art had to instigate the exchange again and again. Not only between points of the compass, but between souls as well.
